About NAPLAN Year 3 Reading

NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Reading test checks how well your child understands what they read. Students read a mix of stories, information texts, poems and other short texts, then answer questions about them.

Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Frequently asked questions

How should my child use this practice page?

Let them read one passage, answer the questions on their own, then talk about any red answers together. Ask them to show where in the text the right answer is hiding.

How often should we practise?

Short and regular works best. Two or three short sessions a week is better than one long session the night before.

Does reading for fun help?

Yes. Reading stories, poems and information books at home builds vocabulary and understanding, which is exactly what the Reading test looks at.
