About NAPLAN Year 5 Grammar and Punctuation

NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Grammar and punctuation are tested in the Language Conventions test, along with spelling. In Year 5, students choose the correct verb form, pronoun or conjunction, use punctuation such as apostrophes, commas and speech marks, and recognise complete sentences. The questions are more demanding than in Year 3.

Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Quick tips for students

  1. 1Read the whole sentence first, then decide which option fits.
  2. 2Say each option in your head. The right one usually sounds correct.
  3. 3Find the verb and ask who or what is doing it.
  4. 4Check the end mark: a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  5. 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.

Frequently asked questions

How should my child use this practice page?

Let them work through one set on their own, then talk about any red answers together. Ask them to explain the grammar rule in their own words.

How often should we practise?

Short and regular works best. Two or three short sessions a week is better than one long session the night before.

Does writing help grammar?

Yes. Writing short stories or diary entries and reading them aloud helps children hear when a sentence is not quite right.
