What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy. It is an annual assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, run by ACARA (the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority). It checks key skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy, and is taken online at school.
NAPLAN is a national school assessment. It is not a selective-entry or scholarship exam, so practice is best used to build confidence with the skills students are already learning.
Test dates, format and timing can change each year. Check ACARA’s official key dates page for the latest information.
What is tested?

Which year levels take NAPLAN?
Quick tips for families
- 1Pick the correct year first, then work through one section at a time.
- 2Keep sessions short. Ten to twenty minutes a few times a week works well.
- 3Talk through every red answer and ask your child to explain the correct one.
- 4Practise all four sections, not just the favourite one.
- 5Keep it relaxed. Practice should build confidence, not stress.
