About NAPLAN Year 5 Spelling

NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Spelling is tested in the Language Conventions test, along with grammar and punctuation. In Year 5, students find spelling mistakes in sentences and write or choose the correct spelling of words that follow common rules, patterns and exceptions. The words are longer and trickier than in Year 3.

Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Frequently asked questions

How should my child use this practice page?

Let them work through one set on their own, then talk about any red answers together. Ask them to say and write the correct word three times.

How often should we practise?

Short and regular works best. Ten minutes a day is better than one long session the night before.

Does reading help spelling?

Yes. The more words children see in books and articles, the more easily they recognise when a word looks wrong.
