About NAPLAN Year 3 Numeracy
NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Numeracy test checks how well students use maths to solve everyday problems, not just how well they can calculate. Questions use words, pictures, tables and graphs.
Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.
What maths is covered?
Quick tips for students
- 1Read the whole question twice. Underline the numbers and key words.
- 2Draw a quick picture or jot down your working to help you think.
- 3Check the units, like cm, kg or minutes, before you choose.
- 4Estimate first. Does your answer make sense?
- 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.
Frequently asked questions
How should my child use this practice page?
Let them work through one set at a time on their own, using scrap paper. Then talk about any red answers together and ask them to explain how they would solve it.
How often should we practise?
Short and regular works best. Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week, is better than one long session the night before.
What if my child keeps getting the same type wrong?
Practise that topic with real objects at home, such as sharing food equally, reading a clock or measuring with a ruler, then try the set again.
