About NAPLAN Year 3 Grammar
In NAPLAN, grammar sits in the Language Conventions test, together with punctuation and spelling. It checks whether students know how to build correct sentences and choose the right words. Questions are usually short, so students need to read each one carefully.
Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.
What is covered?
Quick tips for students
- 1Read the whole sentence first, then look at the answer options.
- 2Say the sentence in your head with each option. Which one sounds right?
- 3Ask yourself: is it past, present or future?
- 4Check capital letters and the punctuation at the end of the sentence.
- 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.
Frequently asked questions
How should my child use this practice page?
Let them work through one set at a time on their own. Then talk about any red answers together and ask them to explain why the correct answer is right.
How often should we practise?
Short and regular works best. Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week, is better than one long session the night before.
How can we practise grammar away from the screen?
Read aloud together and ask your child to spot the nouns, verbs and adjectives. Writing short sentences about their day and checking the punctuation is also great practice.
