About NAPLAN Year 7 Numeracy

NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Year 7 Numeracy test checks how well students use maths to solve problems in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. Questions often use real-life situations and need several steps, so students must decide which maths to use as well as work out the answer.

Test length, question numbers, calculator use and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Types of numeracy questions

Number and algebraPercentages, fractions, decimals, order of operations and simple equations.
Measurement and geometryArea, volume, angles, time, speed and scale.
Statistics and probabilityMean, median, chance with and without replacement, and working backwards from an average.
Problem solvingMulti-step word problems. Pick out the key facts, choose a method, then check your answer.

Quick tips for students

  1. 1Read the whole problem and underline the numbers and what is being asked.
  2. 2Write your working on paper. Do it step by step.
  3. 3Estimate first so you can spot answers that are far too big or too small.
  4. 4Check the units, such as cm, m², litres or minutes.
  5. 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.

Frequently asked questions

How should my child use this practice page?

Let them work on paper first, then pick an answer. Talk about any red answers together and ask them to explain each step of the method.

Should my child use a calculator?

Try without one first, as mental and written skills matter. Check the official NAP website to see how calculators are used in the current test.

How often should we practise?

Short and regular works best. Two or three short sessions a week is better than one long session the night before.
