About NAPLAN Year 7 Spelling
NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Spelling is tested in the Language Conventions test, along with grammar and punctuation. In Year 7, students spell longer, less common words, including words with double letters, tricky endings, silent letters and homophones. Words are chosen from the kind of vocabulary found in school subjects and wider reading.
Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Quick tips for students
- 1Break long words into syllables and check each part, like ac-com-mo-date.
- 2Look for double letters, such as necessary, embarrassed and occurrence.
- 3Use the meaning of the sentence to choose between homophones.
- 4Look for root words and prefixes, like conscience inside conscientious.
- 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.
Frequently asked questions
How should my child use this practice page?
Let them work through one set on their own, then talk about any red answers together. Ask them to write each missed word three times and use it in a sentence.
How often should we practise?
Short and regular works best. Ten minutes a day is better than one long session the night before.
Does reading help spelling?
Yes. Wide reading exposes students to new vocabulary, so they recognise when a word looks wrong.
