About NAPLAN Year 9 Reading
NAPLAN is a national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Year 9 Reading test checks how well students understand, interpret and think about what they read. Students read a mix of stories, information texts, persuasive texts and poems, then answer questions about them. The texts are longer and the questions ask for more careful thinking than in Year 7.
Test length, question numbers and formats can change from year to year, so check the official NAP website for the latest details.

Quick tips for students
- 1Read the passage carefully. Underline key ideas and names as you go.
- 2Read the question and all four options before choosing.
- 3Find evidence in the text. Do not choose an answer just because it sounds right.
- 4Watch for words like best, mainly and suggests. They tell you what kind of answer is needed.
- 5If you are stuck, move on and come back later.
Frequently asked questions
How should my child use this practice page?
Let them read one passage, answer the questions on their own, then talk about any red answers together. Ask them to show the exact place in the text that proves the right answer.
How often should we practise?
Short and regular works best. Two or three sessions a week is better than one long session the night before.
Does reading for fun help?
Yes. Reading novels, news articles and information books builds vocabulary and understanding, which is exactly what the Reading test looks at.
